Reciprocity

Traveling outside of Maryland often leads to questions about whether medical cannabis access continues elsewhere. Because cannabis laws are set at the state level, what’s allowed can vary depending on where you go.

How Reciprocity Works

Some states provide limited recognition of medical cannabis authorizations issued in other jurisdictions. This may allow visiting patients to possess cannabis or require a temporary registration before purchasing. These policies are determined individually by each state.

A medical cannabis certification issued in Maryland is valid within the state but is not automatically accepted nationwide. Each destination sets its own rules, and some states do not allow any access for non-resident patients.

States That May Allow Limited Access (2026)

While many states restrict access to residents, some may offer options for visiting medical cannabis patients under certain conditions:

  • Arizona
  • Arkansas (visitor card required)
  • Hawaii (temporary registration required)
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • Oklahoma (temporary license required)
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah (visitor card required)
  • District of Columbia

Travel Considerations: Because cannabis laws change frequently, it’s important to review the most current regulations before traveling.

It is also important to remember that transporting cannabis across state lines remains illegal under federal law, even when traveling between states where cannabis is otherwise permitted.
